[TRANS] Esquire - Chansung of 2PM Interview ( June 2017)

Man at His Best

Thoughts, Words, Dreams, and Chansung

Chansung thinks. And speaks accordingly. And now I have a dream, Chansung says.

Editor Min Youngjun (Min): Yesterday was the Election Day. I heard it was your second presidential election.
Hwang Chansung (Hwang): That’s right. And I voted for the same person both times.
Min: Don’t you make it too obvious who you voted for?
Hwang: I already tweeted about it as I was coming here for the photo shoot.
Min: Actually, it’s pretty rare to ask current idols about political issues. Somehow the question rolled off my tongue naturally because I know you tend to openly express your thoughts on politics or social issues on Twitter. But don’t you get uncomfortable yourself, when people ask you this?
Hwang: Not really. People my age, in their 20s, are a lot more indifferent to the society and the politics than you would think. I think it’s a problem that everyone should be interested in. Since it concerns me, I try to express my concern coherently through the SNS.
Min: Even if you are okay with it, there must be people around you who are worried about it.
Hwang: Quite a few are. My parents are worried, and so are some of fans. Because I immediately say something that feels right, but later on whatever I’ve said might turn out to be wrong. That’s why I make a statement after serious consideration.

Min: Ever since you studied at the Korea Arts High School, you majored in theatre and film. And even before you made your debut with 2PM, you appeared as an actor in the “High Kick through the Roof” series first.
Hwang: Indeed. Around 2 years earlier (than 2PM debut).
Min: Was your dream to be an actor, not a singer?
Hwang: To be honest, I didn’t have a dream. When they would ask us to write down our dreams, if someone next to me wrote “president,” I would write down “president,” too. It was like that (laughs).
Min: You could say you cheated on your dream. (laughs) Then how did you become a singer and a 2PM member?
Hwang: A hyung I know, who had joined the JYP Company, told me they would be holding a survival audition on SBS, and he asked if I intended to participate. That was the beginning. So I passed the preliminaries, but I got eliminated just after two episodes since the beginning of the show, and while I was going home, I got a call asking if I wanted to try becoming a trainee at JYPE, and I agreed to it. As I went through my training, I got to think that this job was interesting, too, and it just started out instinctively.
Min: Training must have been tough. Was it doable even though you weren’t too eager to succeed?
Hwang: To be honest, physically, there would be many other things a lot harder than this. However, mentally, if you do not have a character that supports you like a strong pillar, it’s really hard. I think that I happened to have that kind of mentality.
Min:  Didn’t you wonder why they offered you to become a trainee when you were eliminated after just 2 episodes?
Hwang: Back then, I wasn’t too curious. It was a rare chance, so I just snatched onto it. I think I might have made that decision because I was like that back then.
Min: Eventually, you debuted with 2PM, and you’ve had continuous activities, while also widening your territory as an actor. It was a choice that changed your life.
Hwang: That’s right. Before that, I did taekwondo, I was part of the kendo performance group for a short while, but I totally didn’t study. I didn’t experience a sense of crisis that would have made me think I had to study. But even so I think I was good-natured. Because I didn’t sleep right in front of my teachers at school (laughs). If I would wake up after being sleepy for a while, I would try and focus. After I got out of school, I haven’t studied at all.
Min: We might also say that the offer to become a trainee could’ve been your first motivational push in life.
Hwang: Indeed. My mother had also worried how I would make a living. She was never oppressive, but she would say I did well, if I studied. But when I said I would become a trainee, she told me to try out everything.
image
Min: Queen for Seven days is your first historical drama.
Hwang: I didn’t look for an acting teacher for three years. Because I wanted to try it out by myself somehow. But when I looked at the script, I couldn’t come up with anything. When you look at the text alone, it seems like the breathing manner is different, too. I couldn’t distinctly grasp the character’s tone or feeling that the director wanted, so I eventually sought out an acting instructor. Now, I think, I caught a few strings I can hold onto. Thanks to my teacher, I am practising step by step.
Min: Have you ever been told that your acting is good for an idol?
Hwang: Oh yes. But, to be honest, that kind of thinking is quite natural. It would be weird to say you’re “looking forward” to some sort of an idol actor (laughs). From my point of view, I just have to work hard and hope they would comment when they see the result.
Min: Are you good at taking on malicious comments?
Hwang: When you are active as an idol, you naturally end up getting cursed at lot, so I have some sort of training. On one hand, when you change the point of view, you understand it. When people go through a lot of frustrating situations, they gather a lot of unreleased energy, and since they cannot unleash it unto their family or friends, I think they might end up shooting those arrows at celebrities. Of course, even if I think like that, there are times when I get very angry because of excessive comments, but for the most part, I just think “Ah, something got them really angry, perhaps.”
Min: Even so, you seem to be the type who feels satisfied when you say the things you want to say.
Hwang: In reality, if I get really angry, I don’t speak at all. Because I think that if I open my mouth, I would end up saying things that cannot be contained (laughs). Even when I tweet, I do it already after my anger has subsided and after I have rearranged my thoughts. If I think that there is something I have to say, I do it. If I feel that someone might not have come to their senses, I could also lay out things out in the open, so that they would get it together.
Min: You’re appearing on a stage play in June, too.
Hwang: It’s a premiere of a play “My Love My Bride” directed by Lee Myeongse. Little by little, as we keep on practising, things are settling into their shapes. Now all that is left to do is memorise my lines.
Min: Aren’t you scared? That you might possibly forget your lines?
Hwang: I usually don’t worry about such things. I’m just curious about the venue atmosphere. They say it’s breathtaking if the actors and the audience are on the same wavelength, so I’m looking forward to it.
image
Min: Was it really necessary to try out play acting, too? If you’re good at it, it’s a matter of principle, if you’re not, you’ll get more negative comments.
Hwang: I don’t think that I wouldn’t be able to do that. I’m optimistic to an odd extent, so I’m actually looking forward to see how much fun it is. I’ve always wanted to try out stage acting, too, but it was hard because of my schedule. So I’m doing this now, because I finally can.
Min: Does the number of things you want to try out grow?
Hwang: Perhaps? There are still many roles I haven’t tried. Senior actors keep on saying “One of these days, your own thing will come to you.” I don’t know when that happens, but right now if I think that something might be interesting, I want to try it no matter what.
Min: Do you now have aspirations as an actor?
Hwang: Rather than an aspiration, shall I say it’s a dream? Perhaps it’s a bit too late to call something my dream, but even as I grow older, I want to keep on working like this. I have to constantly find myself, but the more I try to, the more I realise it won’t be easy.
Min: Perhaps you want to encompass them all, as well as 2PM’s Chansung and actor Hwang Chansung?
Hwang: Indeed. I might be too greedy.
Min: But even the president you voted for the first time, eventually got elected when you voted for him the second time.
Hwang: If you keep on fishing, you might eventually catch something. (laughs)

LIFESTYLE - Interview with Nichkhun of 2PM

A Loving Heart, A Pure Mind

“You like designing, and also culinary, so you are a person that likes to try different fields?” “Yes, I am still a 'fresh meat (young man)' so I would like to try different things.” As we heard him describe himself as a 'fresh meat', gazing at his beaming and dazzling face, he seemed even cuter than before.
(Dressed in) A white T-shirt, and white sneakers, he who is sitting opposite of me is the 'Thai-Chinese mixed cutie' that many people admire. Of course, the 'little prince' image is not all of himself, more importantly, he has a loving heart. And that is the reason why he will have more activities in China, during the beginning of March, he was appointed the promotion ambassador of China's Children and Teenager Fund, and he will be doing a series of charity work, such as donating to the fund. In fact, Nichkhun had been doing similar work in Thailand before, he is also the ambassador of UNICEF Thailand, and visited underprivileged areas to help promote the education of children, and made food for them. In addition he told us that he has a friend who founded a fund in South Africa, which teaches children how to play basketball, and promote education, and he would often help out his friend with many things regarding the fund. “What I do are small things, since I can't do everything. So when I think of what I can do, and when I can do something for them, I always try my best to help them.” Nichkhun says, “It doesn't matter if you have money or not, charity work is something that is worth doing. It is a belief, to help those who are less fortunate than you.”
On the internet, someone has used these words to appraise Nichkhun: “Nichkhun completely matches the definition of a 'male god' (in other words, the perfect man), he has an enchantingly perfect face; a tip-top body that can make any man jealous; a warm and kind heart; outstanding talents that can captivate minds; and a naturally godlike temperament. When I read this sentence to him, he bashfully smiled like a child, and when we asked him which of these were the most important, he answered without hesitation, “(A kind) heart is the most important, just like how I would choose a girlfriend, it all comes down to her heart.”

ONLY! Spicy!

“Which Chinese dish is your favourite?” “Xiao chao rou (stir fried pork with chilli peppers)” (Laughs loudly after), “Huo guo! (hotpot)” “Hot pot? The spicy kind?” I was surprised, “ONLY! ONLY!” He emphasized by saying it twice, only spicy. The way he said xiao chao rou and huo guo was so down-to-earth, for a second it felt like he took off his divine halo, and turned into a very friendly, neighbourly young man. As mixed Thai-Chinese, Nichkhun moved from the US at the age of 2 with his parents, but his ethnic Chinese roots still connect him with Chinese culture. Loves huoguo, likes Hainan chicken rice, he even knows the web-term “Pipi xia (Mantis shrimp)”. When asked about Chinese, he wasn't shy about saying, “To learn Chinese well, probably the best way is to find a Chinese girlfriend, that's what all my teachers told me.”
In everyday life, he is energetic, loves sports, goes to the gym, plays golf, likes cooking, and cooks for himself at home, he also likes designing, draws a bit, sketches and doodles, “Although I can't really draw well now, perhaps I could be an artist in the future.” “If I didn't become an performer, I may have become a good chef.” As he finished, he laughed out loud once again.
Indeed he is still a 'fresh meat', and there are lots of possibilities in the future, who knows what could happen.

Q&A With Nichkhun

Q: You are of Thai-Chinese descent, and your mom and grandma are from Hainan. Will you come to China to further your career in 2017? Do you have any paths and plan?
A: I hope I come to China as much as possible, this year I have a Work that will be shot and broadcasted in China. Now, I am preparing for this Work. This year I want to have more cooperation with CCFT (China Children and Teenagers Foundation); and also, I want to do more charity to help more people in China, not only as a job.
Q: Do you have any plan on music?
A: Maybe I will release a single. I love acting, but I am also passionate for music, so I hope I can release a single.
Q: Will you compose by yourself? Which kind of music is your favorite?
A: I will try to do the best of my ability, but I am not sure whether I can do it well (laugh). I enjoy listening to all genres of music, but I listen to soothing music mostly, especially jazz.
Q: You have acted in "One and a Half Summer" and "Forever Young", did you portray yourself in those youth dramas? Did that have a big contrast with youself?
A: I think I was acting as myself, but I was not too familiar (with the role). I was always communicating with the scriptwriter and the director to learn more experience from them. Maybe the director chose me because I fit the role, so it was better to portray myself. It was like I was back in university when I was acting.

Q: Before you acted in different types of dramas, which kind of roles do you want to play in the future?
A: I want to act in some action movies; the previous works were all the same, I want to have some changes on my future work.
Q: Now let's talk about Thailand. What are your feelings about it? Do you have any places that you can recommend to us if we go to Thailand?
A: Thailand is my hometown. I have a lot of memories, a lot of relatives, but not a lot of friends, because I trained to play badminton when I was young. The Phuket Island and Pattaya are good places to go, there are lots of moving markets, and the street foods are pretty good.
Q: You have a good relationship with your family, do you have lots of time that you can spend with them? Do you show another side of yourself when you go back home? (Tell us what happens when you are home)
A: I spend a lot of time with my family. Before when I came to China, my family would come with me. And also, when I was filming the drama, my mom and grandma came as well. When I am with my family, I turn into a driver, a tour guide, to serve them, which makes me full of happiness.
Q: You always give people the impression that you are like a prince, do you think you are the thoughtful and gentle style or the bossy controlling style?
A: I think I am both, I am a person who is able to adapt to the environment very quickly. I left home since I was 12 years old, I can change myself according to the environment.
Q: How do you dispose negative emotions?
A: I have been in many adversities before, but I will tell myself I live well now, I could not let my family and my fans be disappointed in me. They give me the hope and energy to overcome adversity.
Q: Can you tell us which kind of girls will attract your attention? What kind of personality?
A: I like the thoughtful and warm girls. It would be better that she likes sports. And the most important thing is that she must have respect for the elders.
Q: At last, say something to your fans. Do you feel the enthusiasm from the Chinese fans?
A: Thank you for your patience in waiting for my comeback. Hope you all keep in good health and always be happy.

The Wildest Thing That 2PM Has Done - 2PM INTERVIEW in 8days

So the Thai-American boybander’s rep for having impossibly good manners to match his good looks appear to be true after all. Despite making a name as ‘beastly’ idols (Konglish for brawny, rather than a reference to the Disney character) for themselves, the members are laidback, easy-going and well, very un-idol-like in person. Other than exuding warm, friendly vibes and doling
out un-K-pop-like candid answers, English-speaking members Taecyeon and Nichkhun have even taken it upon themselves to be our unofficial translator for the day.
Together, they’re a rambunctious bunch. If those rumours about in-band rivalry are true, it sure didn’t show. As we’re shooting the breeze with the boys on their latest reality show outing, Wild Beat — which sees them embark on a 10-day adventure Down Under — their camaraderie is palpable. Often, they get so carried away chatting among themselves, it was as though we weren’t in the room at all. It may not have been the hottest time of the day when we spoke to 2PM at 3pm, but we’re feeling the brotherly warmth, alright.
8 DAYS: Your latest reality show is called Wild Beat. What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever done in your life?
TAECYEON: (Laughs) For me, it was during my trainee days…
NICHKHUN: Am I included in your story?
TAECYEON: No, you’re not. Do you want to be? Anyway, I had a shoot in Argentina. On the way back, we had a layover in New York. So, I thought I might as well visit my parents [in my Boston home] ’cos I missed my mum! But I didn’t tell my management [JYP Entertainment] back in Korea. I got into a lot of trouble for it. My management got so mad, they kicked me out and I was left out in the cold for three days. But it’s okay. It’s all in the past now. [Fist pumps] JYP! (Laughs)
JANG WOOYOUNG: My upcoming Japanese album has a very wild concept. I dyed my hair and I’m wearing grills!
NICHKHUN: The wildest thing I’ve done recently is take the subway [just last month]. I was going to Bangbae with one of my managers, and to drive there would take an hour but to take the subway would only take 25 minutes. It was really fun. I was so excited, so I was filming myself [and posted it on Instagram]. That was pretty wild. It was my first time taking the subway in 10 years. Back when we were trainees, we’d take the subway all the time to go to [rehearsals]. But I haven’t done so since then, and it’s changed so much.
CHANSUNG: I recently grew out my moustache for two weeks ’cos I didn’t have any official schedules that required me to do my hair and make-up. I was curious to see how it would look. When I saw myself in the mirror, I was really shocked at my appearance. So I shaved it off.
TAECYEON: No one recognised him.
NICHKHUN: It was really long.
LEE JUNHO: I was shooting a drama in Korea for three months, and many times, I’d have to stay out for three days in a row. I also couldn’t sleep [’cos of the hectic filming schedule]. I was a bit out of it then, and even now.

On Wild Beat, to fund your trip from Melbourne to Uluru, you had to take on part-time jobs in Australia. Some of you worked as waiters, chefs and dishwashers. What kind of struggles did you face?
JUNHO:
It was embarrassing ’cos it was my first time [going out there to look for a job]. Who would give anyone without any experience a job in one day? So I didn’t like our producer in Australia. Just kidding. (Laughs) It was really hard to find a job in that situation. But I eventually did. I received a lot of help from the restaurant owners. Cooking is very difficult. The queues at the restaurant I worked at was very long. There were only three chefs, including myself, at that time. So we had to keep cooking and it was very difficult for us to even go on bathroom breaks.
TAECYEON: I did dishwashing and I thought it was very peaceful. You don’t really have to worry about anything. You just wash the dishes and there’s warm water coming out of the faucet. I was just by myself, the water’s running and I’m slowly washing the dishes. And it doesn’t stop — the dishes keep coming and I’m like, “Hmm, this will never end.” I had so much time to think about my life, like, what am I doing here?
NICHKHUN: I guess it could be very therapeutic. That means you’re not working hard enough! You’re supposed to be looking at the dishes to see if they’re clean enough.
TAECYEON: Usually, for dishwashing, you have to soak all the dishes first and then wash them with water altogether at once. But, since I’m not really good at dishwashing, I did it one dish at a time. It was very time-consuming, but relaxing. I suck at dishwashing, by the way.
NICHKHUN: I was waiting tables, taking orders and cleaning up the tables. The hardest part was to not spill food on people ’cos I had to move really fast and the floor was slippery at times. So I had to try to balance those plates on my hands while walking through tables and chairs.
Before you guys found fame with 2PM, what part-time jobs did you take on?
CHANSUNG:
I was giving out and posting up flyers.
WOOYOUNG: My parents owned a supermarket. So I worked with my mum from a very young age delivering goods on my bicycle.
NICHKHUN: I didn’t work. I just went to school.
TAECYEON: I had a part-time job as a beta tester for remote controls. In America, my friend’s mum used to work in Verizon, the phone company. They were coming out with remotes. So I had to test the different remotes. I’d just pick up a remote, use it, and be like, [ticks off a box on an imaginary form] ‘Okay, not bad.’ I did that when I was 16 or 17 ’cos they paid really well — US$80 (S$112) bucks an hour.
NICHKHUN: (Incredulously) What?! Why did you leave your job?!
TAECYEON: But it was only for two hours [each time].
NICHKHUN: Just stick to clicking remotes. You’ll be rich!
What new things did you learn about your band members on this trip that you never knew in the 10 years you’ve been together as a group?
NICHKHUN:
We lived together for almost eight years. So we know pretty much everything about each other, except for the fact that Taecyeon spends a lot of money.
TAECYEON: It was just for the show.
NICHKHUN: For himself!
TAECYEON: That’s true. We know each other so well that we don’t really have anything new to find out. ’Cos we lived together…
NICHKHUN: … we already know each other’s habits.
CHANSUNG: Like snoring and all?
TAECYEON: Like sleeping habits, but we already knew that before we went on the trip.

2PM EXPERIENCING THE HARDSHIP TOGETHER WITH HAPPINESS - UW MAGAZINE [INTERVIEW]

South Korea dynamic group 2PM (Jun. K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho and Chansung) debuted in 2008, has got together with the full strength of six members, flying to Australia to film a reality travelling show <2PM Wild Beat>. After experiencing “working and travelling” overseas, are they still good friends? Are they still willing to travel overseas with one another?!
When receiving our exclusive email interview, Wooyoung (27 years old) and Junho (27 years old) was busy with their own schedules, and Jun. K (29 years old) was recuperating, thus were unable to answer our questions. Fortunately, Nichkhun (28 years old), Taecyeon (28 years old) and Chansung (27 years old) participated actively 🙂
Travelling together
UW: from the training period until now, 2PM has already interacted with one another for about 10 years, however this is your first time travelling together for a long period of time. How did you manage to “overcome” that?
Nichkhun: everyone knows that we have very strong teamwork, being able to work together. We lived together for a long period of time and also always going overseas to perform, hence we are very clear with one another’s small habits. I feel that we are a group of travelling companions who understand one another very well.
Taecyeon: as everyone knows one another very well, so even if it was challenging, it will be very comfortable. Being able to travel overseas together is already very fun.
Chansung: actually, I feel that finding a part time job is more challenging, however it is not very exhausting. In a nut shell, as everyone is a good person, hence all the challenges are positive.
Wooyoung exposing his true personality?
UW: we often say that when travelling together, the true personality will definitely be exposed. Do you agree? During this trip, did you manage to find out any true personalities?
Nichkhun: I agree that when everyone is travelling together, they will expose their true personality. However, as we have already known one another so well, there isn’t any surprising part. Even said so, when Wooyoung became the “king”, he has a side that I did not expect of. I always thought that he would not spend money recklessly but I really didn’t think that he would actually spend so much money! He is actually a very nice person, but everything changes once he becomes the “king”! (laughs)
Taecyeon: hmm… if we were to travel together, everyone’s true personalities may appear, but with the cameras around, will they really appear? (laughs) However, <2PM Wild Beat> did show our “natural side” as everyone are good friends, our relationship is also very good.
Chansung: I agree with this sentence, but I do not think that whatever is shown is their true personalities because during this trip, we have met with a lot of sudden situations. Or maybe when everyone is experiencing their “first time”, then they will show their true personalities. However, I do not think that just by judging from the person’s actions or reactions can clearly see their personalities without any errors.
UW: if you were to choose a “king” after the show, who would you choose?
Nichkhun: if I were to choose the “king” with the similar situations that happened during our trip, of course everyone should cast me a vote! (laughs) as what you have seen (from the show), I will be a very good king with no noxious intentions.
Taecyeon: I do not wish to choose a “king”. Everyone should work together, isn’t it better to travel together?
Chansung: I will not choose a “king”! (laughs)
Most exhausting VS most delightful
UW: what is the most exhausting part when filming this programme? Working? Living in a hostel? Limited budget?
Nichkhun: I think that the staying place has a little challenge. It felt like I went back in time to many years ago, the room when I was still a trainee. When I first entered the room, once I saw the double decker bed, it immediately came into my mind that it will be difficult to sleep.
Taecyeon: it is a little challenging to travel, film and work all at the same time. As for the hotel room situation, I didn’t feel unfamiliar at all hence it is not very tough for me.
Chansung: it should be the limited budget… I hope that (our budget) could be a little more because when I am travelling, I would want to do many thing and eat a lot of food!
UW: what is the most delightful thing when filming the programme?
Nichkhun: isn’t t just all of us being able to travel together to Australia? I feel that Australia is a place that can help us with healing mentally. The surroundings all have a nature conservation type of atmosphere, even the animals are not afraid of human.
Taecyeon: the most meaningful thing is to be able to travel with the members.
Chansung: I don’t think there is any.
Part time job experience
UW: every member in the first episode of the programme mentioned their ideal part time job, like Jun. L wanting to become a street busker, Chansung could be a nightclub’s security officer etc. Do you enjoy these part time jobs?
Nichkhun: within all the jobs done, I feel that helping to build homes for the penguins was the happiest. As they are really very cute, I could not feel the tiredness at all, what is the most important is that we made those for them.
Taecyeon: I don’t think I have any part time job that I especially want to do.
Chansung: personally, I enjoy feeding animals and clearing for them. This was also my first time experiencing this and communicating with them. I feel very amazed as they are practically the animals that I met for the first time in my life.
UW: if I were to ask you to choose a holiday job now, what will you choose?
Nichkhun: I would want to be a tour guide. Firstly, I am able to speak English and I hope to go to new places, meeting new people. If I were to really become a tour guide, I think I can be qualified.
Taecyeon: ah… this is too difficult to choose. I will skip this question (laughs).
Chansung: Bungee jumping worker! I feel that I am very good at giving someone a “push”! (laughs)
In the future, will you still travel overseas together?
UW: if you are still able to travel together, who will you choose? Why?
Nichkhun: which member do I want to travel with… I think I cannot make a decision because this trip with all members of 2PM was really enjoyable. I still want to travel together with them!
Taecyeon: if we could travel together again, I would still want to travel with all of them!
Chansung: I would still want to travel with everyone. Minjun’s personality is very bright, hence he is able to make good friends everywhere. Due to that, I do not have to worry no matter where I go. Recently, Nichkhun hyung and I have a common interest hence we are able to go and play golf together. Taecyeon hyung will be a very good partner to have a food trip. Wooyoung is more causal and would not plan while moving around. This type of trip is also interesting. Junho will obediently listen to me! (laughs)
UW: did this trip boost 2PM’s relationship?
Nichkhun: it did because we did a lot of talks, and it is even the first time all of us stay in the same room. Our friendship seems to become better.
Taecyeon: since the start we are able to interact very happily. Travelling together can help us to create more memories.
Chansung: in conclusion, this trip indeed gave us some challenges but I feel that the relationship between members did become closer.
UW: if you are able to choose the next trip location for 2PM, where will you choose? Why?
Nichkhun: if I could choose, I hope to go to America because I am very familiar with the place there. I hope that I can bring the members there.
Taecyeon: I will choose to go to Jeju Island because it is nearer, I can be more relaxed.
Chansung: I really do not know, but if we were to travel together with all the members, it will be very happy.
Taecyeon who will be enlisting this year, please help the members to say their 2017 wish: “let’s enlist together! This year, being in the military is the most important goal and decision.” (editor words: hope that all members of 2PM enlist together?! I think the fans will protest against it!)
*Below are the excerpts that are already in English. I did not translate them
UW: in the first episode of “2PM Wild Beat”, we saw the different characteristics of each member, do you agree with your assigned role?
Nichkhun: yes, I agree, I think we all have the best roles that fir our personality traits and characteristics. I had been working hard and when I was assigned to be king, I tried to be fair to everyone. For example, when I thought that it would be a little harder to make money in the beginning, I had to plan and collect money carefully. In the case of Junho, I guided the road without taking the app away from wherever I went. Wooyoung has always been so fun and it made my trip so enjoyable.
Taecyeon: I was assigned a character to myself for fun. If you only saw what was on air, then perhaps you may misunderstand me, but I do not usually spend a lot of money. I actually sacrificed myself for the fun of travelling with you ^ ^
Chansung: we do not have similar roles because we all have different characteristics. Therefore, I think that the various roles we adopted came by naturally, as opposed to something scripted. Out programme is also not just about playing multiple roles, but rather, it is centered on our casual friendship.
UW: if you can relabel each member instead of what is given to them in the programme, what will you label each member as and why?
Nichkhun: I like the angelic nickname given to me and I do not want to change it. Everyone seems to have a funny nickname. “The final boss of foul play” Wooyoung and “ExtravacaTAEC” Taecyeon.
Taecyeon: “ExtravacaTAEC” I still like my nickname. Did everyone’s nickname get along well? I think it seems to fit well.
Chansung: I thought I didn’t have any nicknames, but there seems to be some nicknames from the programme. My nickname becomes “Power Chansung” which I think it was funny.

" I AM AN “ENTERTAINER” BUT DOING CHARITY IS NOT ENTERTAINING "- Nichkhun of 2PM

1120629548_14895416043881n

There are many people who was scouted into the entertainment industry, and Nichkhun was one of them. After receiving this, Nichkhun’s life has changed. He once dreamed to be a professional photographer when he was young, hoping to use photos to tell stories. Up till now, he is still telling stories but instead from photos, it is through songs and characters. The entertainment industry helped him to find out his hidden talents, he said, “I am born an entertainer.”
Encouraging others, becoming better, working hard are terms that are frequently used by Nichkhun. He has the aura of a strong individual values and self-discovery and realisation personality, maybe this is due to him studying overseas, always working hard to “become a better person, and using my fame and influential to inspire more people”. Before learning a skill, you need to learn how to be a person, even with the tempting fame in front of him in the entertainment industry, he maintained a clear mind, Nichkhun is training hard in the acting industry, “I cannot say that I am a good actor because I am just starting only. There are still a lot of things to learn.” In the future, Nichkhun will also provide new results from singing and performing. He will be taking part in movies, releasing singles, using his works to build a foundation for his career and use them to inspire more people.
Born an Entertainer
As he just started learning Mandarin, he could only use simple words in Mandarin conversations. During the interview, Nichkhun did not talk much, initially thinking that it may be due to language barriers. After that we realised that he is actually a very shy person, and this shy personality almost ended Nichkhun’s entertainment career. When Nichkhun was scouted at the age of 20, his shy personality made him reject that chance, “I do not even dare to speak in front of a crowd, don’t even talk about dancing and singing, that is totally a nightmare for me”, however with the support from his parents, he decided to give it a try. This caused him to meet with obstacles very quickly once again. Training for singing and dancing requires a lot of effort and energy, and this was not a motivation for Nichkhun, who didn’t want to be a singer in the first place, “I almost wanted to pack up and go back to the school in America”, a call from his parents caused Nichkhun to stay in the entertainment industry. “They told me that it doesn’t matter if I return or not, but think about it, this is a rare chance, why not give it a try? We will continue to support you even if you fail.” Nichkhun’s parents are always his strong pillar of support. Until now, Nichkhun is always thankful for his parents, “Initially my parents will tell me a lot of principles and I didn’t listen to them. However as I grew up, I realised that these principles are very valuable. They can help me to become a better person, hence I am always very thankful for my parents.”
With this journey, Nichkhun has more and more developments, only he will know those different hard times, however many years of working hard has already trained his will power, “the most difficult thing is to challenge myself, walking out of my own comfort zone, trying out new things in life and in work. If you really want to do something, go ahead and do it, you do not need to think if you will become terrible, because no matter how you start, if you put in sufficient hard work, you are able to do even better, you can become the master.” Nickhun continued to move forward with this type of mindset. He once thought that he was a good-for-nothing, but as he looked back, he said, “I found out things that I do not know about myself, I did it, I am very happy that I did it”. Today, he is already deeply in love with his career, “I found out that I have this type of ability, I think I am born an entertainer.” The term “entertainer” is not frequently used in the entertainment industry, but in the eyes of Nichkhun, his job is to let everyone to be happy, be it singing, acting or taking part in variety shoes. He hopes to bring happiness to everyone, hence he does not want to give himself a specific term, “I am more tham willing to let everyone call me as the ‘entertainer’.”

Wants to become a Hero
Other than “Entertainer” Nichkhun participating in Chinese variety show <Let’s Get Married> , he also participated is some other television drama and movie, and he has a deep memory for the drama <1 1/2 Summer>. His character in the drama was specifically designed for him, where Nichkhun acted as an American who came to China as a university student, giving him a deep impression of China;s traditions and cultures. Even though Nichkhun and his parents migrated to America when he was 2 years old, however his bloodline from China still linked him with the Chinese traditions and cultures. He is currently studying hard for Chinese characters, always saying, “Chinese characters, interesting, interesting.” During the interview, he even tried to use Mandarin to have some interactions, even though the words use are simple, but his pronunciation is very accurate, having lots of curiosity and passion about Chinese characters. In the future, he will travel to China more often to meet with the fans, also bringing his works at the same time, “I am currently in the midst of discussing a movie and it will start shooting very soon, I hope that this movie will be premiered in China quickly. Also, for my acting career, will be doing a series of events. At the end of this year, I hope that I will be able to release a single, organise some concerts and have more interactions with the fans.”
When talking about acting, we will also talk about acting skills, Nichkhun said, “I cannot say that I am a good actor, because I am just starting out, there are a lot of things to learn.” He will watch movies and check the actor’s acting skills to think and learn. Characters will also be talked about, Nichkhun thought for a while when he was asked about a type of character that he specially wished he could act, “hmm… hero?” and then he started to laugh shyly, then continued with a serious tine, “I am a sporty person and I want to try action film next time. However I will still have to see what type of script I will be receiving, I just want to do well with whatever I am doing now.” Nichkhun is full of curiosity for his future, “I know a principle by heart, which is ‘吾生也有涯而知也无涯’ (meaning that human life is finite but knowledge is infinite. Using this finite life to chase those infinite knowledge.), I am always curious about all the things that I will be doing, hoping that I will become better”, and after that he added, “If you want to become better, you have to work hard all the time.”
Using a smile and giving back to the society
Nichkhun is always using actions to inspire more people to do charity, be it in Thailand or China, he will have the appearance of doing charity. This time Nichkhun appeared as China Children and Teenagers’ Fund Ambassador, loving and caring Chinese children and teenagers’ health and growth. Charity work becomes part of Nichkhun’s work and life, “Actually charity work can be something very small, such as giving a smile, or praising someone in their life, this is not all about money only, it is just hoping to give somone else a better life.” Bringing this type of wish, Nichkhun has never stopped his steps in charity.
Artiste doing charity is always easy to become a topic of someone who is trying to gain attention, while facing this, Nichkhun said, “As time passes, people will know that I am doing this not for fame, but really for charity work. I’m doing this because I can contribute to the world, to the country and to the society. I don’t really care about what others have to say, as long as I put in my effort to help the people who need help, I will be very happy.” In order to inspire more people, Nichkhun is working even harder, “I will never stop working hard, I am very happy to see my fans using me as their role model, using their own effort to do charity work, my mother will also do the same thing. My mother has always been telling me, ‘What is taken from the people is used in the interest of people’ hence to allow the people around me to feel blessed, I feel that I have already succeeded.”

Revealing of Youth Secrets: Nichkhun’s Youth Secrets
Looking at Nichkhun full of youthfulness, we just felt like knowing more about Nichkhun’s youth, let’s take a look at Nichkhun’s youth.
Xinhuanet (X): what is your youth dream?
Nichkhun (N): I am a very smart person but not in the mathematics kind of way, I like art and photography hence my biggest dream was to become a professional photographer.
X: what hard work did you put into for your dream?
N: recently I went to Hawaii with my friends. We took a lot of photos and even made a photobook. I have always liked photography hence be it phone or camera, I will always take a lot of photos. I think photos are very mysterious, you can tell a lot of stories from them.
X: what about your rebllious youth period?
N: all the while, I am not what they call the good boy. I have my own rebellious period too, and do not wish to look back at those memories, but I have never done anything to make my parents sad.
X: what is th e most crazy thing that you have done when you were a youth?
N: since young, my father didn’t buy any toys for me, because my family’s financial background is just normal, those money were use to buy daily necessities and food. At that time, I saved a small amount of money and bought a game and was caught by my father. I told him why I wanted that game and I worked hard to save those money, and in the end he was very understanding.
X: living the fullest of the youth period, what do you think that you should do?
N: as a teen we should move the fullest. Make use of it to do the things that you want. When I was young I didn’t have a lot of friends because after school I would go train for badminton, piano and other arts skills, I don’t have the time to shop around with my friends, to the point that currently I do not have any friends from that period of time. A word for the youngsters, cherish what you have right now but you must listen to your parents’ advices because they are correct most of the time.
