There are many people who was scouted into the entertainment industry, and Nichkhun was one of them. After receiving this, Nichkhun’s life has changed. He once dreamed to be a professional photographer when he was young, hoping to use photos to tell stories. Up till now, he is still telling stories but instead from photos, it is through songs and characters. The entertainment industry helped him to find out his hidden talents, he said, “I am born an entertainer.”
Encouraging others, becoming better, working hard are terms that are frequently used by Nichkhun. He has the aura of a strong individual values and self-discovery and realisation personality, maybe this is due to him studying overseas, always working hard to “become a better person, and using my fame and influential to inspire more people”. Before learning a skill, you need to learn how to be a person, even with the tempting fame in front of him in the entertainment industry, he maintained a clear mind, Nichkhun is training hard in the acting industry, “I cannot say that I am a good actor because I am just starting only. There are still a lot of things to learn.” In the future, Nichkhun will also provide new results from singing and performing. He will be taking part in movies, releasing singles, using his works to build a foundation for his career and use them to inspire more people.
Born an Entertainer
As he just started learning Mandarin, he could only use simple words in Mandarin conversations. During the interview, Nichkhun did not talk much, initially thinking that it may be due to language barriers. After that we realised that he is actually a very shy person, and this shy personality almost ended Nichkhun’s entertainment career. When Nichkhun was scouted at the age of 20, his shy personality made him reject that chance, “I do not even dare to speak in front of a crowd, don’t even talk about dancing and singing, that is totally a nightmare for me”, however with the support from his parents, he decided to give it a try. This caused him to meet with obstacles very quickly once again. Training for singing and dancing requires a lot of effort and energy, and this was not a motivation for Nichkhun, who didn’t want to be a singer in the first place, “I almost wanted to pack up and go back to the school in America”, a call from his parents caused Nichkhun to stay in the entertainment industry. “They told me that it doesn’t matter if I return or not, but think about it, this is a rare chance, why not give it a try? We will continue to support you even if you fail.” Nichkhun’s parents are always his strong pillar of support. Until now, Nichkhun is always thankful for his parents, “Initially my parents will tell me a lot of principles and I didn’t listen to them. However as I grew up, I realised that these principles are very valuable. They can help me to become a better person, hence I am always very thankful for my parents.”
With this journey, Nichkhun has more and more developments, only he will know those different hard times, however many years of working hard has already trained his will power, “the most difficult thing is to challenge myself, walking out of my own comfort zone, trying out new things in life and in work. If you really want to do something, go ahead and do it, you do not need to think if you will become terrible, because no matter how you start, if you put in sufficient hard work, you are able to do even better, you can become the master.” Nickhun continued to move forward with this type of mindset. He once thought that he was a good-for-nothing, but as he looked back, he said, “I found out things that I do not know about myself, I did it, I am very happy that I did it”. Today, he is already deeply in love with his career, “I found out that I have this type of ability, I think I am born an entertainer.” The term “entertainer” is not frequently used in the entertainment industry, but in the eyes of Nichkhun, his job is to let everyone to be happy, be it singing, acting or taking part in variety shoes. He hopes to bring happiness to everyone, hence he does not want to give himself a specific term, “I am more tham willing to let everyone call me as the ‘entertainer’.”
Wants to become a Hero
Other than “Entertainer” Nichkhun participating in Chinese variety show <Let’s Get Married> , he also participated is some other television drama and movie, and he has a deep memory for the drama <1 1/2 Summer>. His character in the drama was specifically designed for him, where Nichkhun acted as an American who came to China as a university student, giving him a deep impression of China;s traditions and cultures. Even though Nichkhun and his parents migrated to America when he was 2 years old, however his bloodline from China still linked him with the Chinese traditions and cultures. He is currently studying hard for Chinese characters, always saying, “Chinese characters, interesting, interesting.” During the interview, he even tried to use Mandarin to have some interactions, even though the words use are simple, but his pronunciation is very accurate, having lots of curiosity and passion about Chinese characters. Using this finite life to chase those infinite knowledge.), I am always curious about all the things that I will be doing, hoping that I will become better”, and after that he added, “If you want to become better, you have to work hard all the time.”
Using a smile and giving back to the society
Nichkhun is always using actions to inspire more people to do charity, be it in Thailand or China, he will have the appearance of doing charity. This time Nichkhun appeared as China Children and Teenagers’ Fund Ambassador, loving and caring Chinese children and teenagers’ health and growth. Charity work becomes part of Nichkhun’s work and life, “Actually charity work can be something very small, such as giving a smile, or praising someone in their life, this is not all about money only, it is just hoping to give somone else a better life.” Bringing this type of wish, Nichkhun has never stopped his steps in charity.
Artiste doing charity is always easy to become a topic of someone who is trying to gain attention, while facing this, Nichkhun said, “As time passes, people will know that I am doing this not for fame, but really for charity work. I’m doing this because I can contribute to the world, to the country and to the society. I don’t really care about what others have to say, as long as I put in my effort to help the people who need help, I will be very happy.” In order to inspire more people, Nichkhun is working even harder, “I will never stop working hard, I am very happy to see my fans using me as their role model, using their own effort to do charity work, my mother will also do the same thing. Xinhuanet (X): what is your youth dream?
Nichkhun (N): I am a very smart person but not in the mathematics kind of way, I like art and photography hence my biggest dream was to become a professional photographer.
X: what hard work did you put into for your dream?
N: recently I went to Hawaii with my friends. We took a lot of photos and even made a photobook. I have always liked photography hence be it phone or camera, I will always take a lot of photos. I think photos are very mysterious, you can tell a lot of stories from them.
X: what about your rebllious youth period?
N: all the while, I am not what they call the good boy. I have my own rebellious period too, and do not wish to look back at those memories, but I have never done anything to make my parents sad.
X: what is th e most crazy thing that you have done when you were a youth?
N: since young, my father didn’t buy any toys for me, because my family’s financial background is just normal, those money were use to buy daily necessities and food. At that time, I saved a small amount of money and bought a game and was caught by my father. I told him why I wanted that game and I worked hard to save those money, and in the end he was very understanding.
X: living the fullest of the youth period, what do you think that you should do?
N: as a teen we should move the fullest. Make use of it to do the things that you want. When I was young I didn’t have a lot of friends because after school I would go train for badminton, piano and other arts skills, I don’t have the time to shop around with my friends, to the point that currently I do not have any friends from that period of time. A word for the youngsters, cherish what you have right now but you must listen to your parents’ advices because they are correct most of the time.
