The Wildest Thing That 2PM Has Done - 2PM INTERVIEW in 8days

So the Thai-American boybander’s rep for having impossibly good manners to match his good looks appear to be true after all. Despite making a name as ‘beastly’ idols (Konglish for brawny, rather than a reference to the Disney character) for themselves, the members are laidback, easy-going and well, very un-idol-like in person. Other than exuding warm, friendly vibes and doling
out un-K-pop-like candid answers, English-speaking members Taecyeon and Nichkhun have even taken it upon themselves to be our unofficial translator for the day.
Together, they’re a rambunctious bunch. If those rumours about in-band rivalry are true, it sure didn’t show. As we’re shooting the breeze with the boys on their latest reality show outing, Wild Beat — which sees them embark on a 10-day adventure Down Under — their camaraderie is palpable. Often, they get so carried away chatting among themselves, it was as though we weren’t in the room at all. It may not have been the hottest time of the day when we spoke to 2PM at 3pm, but we’re feeling the brotherly warmth, alright.
8 DAYS: Your latest reality show is called Wild Beat. What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever done in your life?
TAECYEON: (Laughs) For me, it was during my trainee days…
NICHKHUN: Am I included in your story?
TAECYEON: No, you’re not. Do you want to be? Anyway, I had a shoot in Argentina. On the way back, we had a layover in New York. So, I thought I might as well visit my parents [in my Boston home] ’cos I missed my mum! But I didn’t tell my management [JYP Entertainment] back in Korea. I got into a lot of trouble for it. My management got so mad, they kicked me out and I was left out in the cold for three days. But it’s okay. It’s all in the past now. [Fist pumps] JYP! (Laughs)
JANG WOOYOUNG: My upcoming Japanese album has a very wild concept. I dyed my hair and I’m wearing grills!
NICHKHUN: The wildest thing I’ve done recently is take the subway [just last month]. I was going to Bangbae with one of my managers, and to drive there would take an hour but to take the subway would only take 25 minutes. It was really fun. I was so excited, so I was filming myself [and posted it on Instagram]. That was pretty wild. It was my first time taking the subway in 10 years. Back when we were trainees, we’d take the subway all the time to go to [rehearsals]. But I haven’t done so since then, and it’s changed so much.
CHANSUNG: I recently grew out my moustache for two weeks ’cos I didn’t have any official schedules that required me to do my hair and make-up. I was curious to see how it would look. When I saw myself in the mirror, I was really shocked at my appearance. So I shaved it off.
TAECYEON: No one recognised him.
NICHKHUN: It was really long.
LEE JUNHO: I was shooting a drama in Korea for three months, and many times, I’d have to stay out for three days in a row. I also couldn’t sleep [’cos of the hectic filming schedule]. I was a bit out of it then, and even now.

On Wild Beat, to fund your trip from Melbourne to Uluru, you had to take on part-time jobs in Australia. Some of you worked as waiters, chefs and dishwashers. What kind of struggles did you face?
JUNHO:
It was embarrassing ’cos it was my first time [going out there to look for a job]. Who would give anyone without any experience a job in one day? So I didn’t like our producer in Australia. Just kidding. (Laughs) It was really hard to find a job in that situation. But I eventually did. I received a lot of help from the restaurant owners. Cooking is very difficult. The queues at the restaurant I worked at was very long. There were only three chefs, including myself, at that time. So we had to keep cooking and it was very difficult for us to even go on bathroom breaks.
TAECYEON: I did dishwashing and I thought it was very peaceful. You don’t really have to worry about anything. You just wash the dishes and there’s warm water coming out of the faucet. I was just by myself, the water’s running and I’m slowly washing the dishes. And it doesn’t stop — the dishes keep coming and I’m like, “Hmm, this will never end.” I had so much time to think about my life, like, what am I doing here?
NICHKHUN: I guess it could be very therapeutic. That means you’re not working hard enough! You’re supposed to be looking at the dishes to see if they’re clean enough.
TAECYEON: Usually, for dishwashing, you have to soak all the dishes first and then wash them with water altogether at once. But, since I’m not really good at dishwashing, I did it one dish at a time. It was very time-consuming, but relaxing. I suck at dishwashing, by the way.
NICHKHUN: I was waiting tables, taking orders and cleaning up the tables. The hardest part was to not spill food on people ’cos I had to move really fast and the floor was slippery at times. So I had to try to balance those plates on my hands while walking through tables and chairs.
Before you guys found fame with 2PM, what part-time jobs did you take on?
CHANSUNG:
I was giving out and posting up flyers.
WOOYOUNG: My parents owned a supermarket. So I worked with my mum from a very young age delivering goods on my bicycle.
NICHKHUN: I didn’t work. I just went to school.
TAECYEON: I had a part-time job as a beta tester for remote controls. In America, my friend’s mum used to work in Verizon, the phone company. They were coming out with remotes. So I had to test the different remotes. I’d just pick up a remote, use it, and be like, [ticks off a box on an imaginary form] ‘Okay, not bad.’ I did that when I was 16 or 17 ’cos they paid really well — US$80 (S$112) bucks an hour.
NICHKHUN: (Incredulously) What?! Why did you leave your job?!
TAECYEON: But it was only for two hours [each time].
NICHKHUN: Just stick to clicking remotes. You’ll be rich!
What new things did you learn about your band members on this trip that you never knew in the 10 years you’ve been together as a group?
NICHKHUN:
We lived together for almost eight years. So we know pretty much everything about each other, except for the fact that Taecyeon spends a lot of money.
TAECYEON: It was just for the show.
NICHKHUN: For himself!
TAECYEON: That’s true. We know each other so well that we don’t really have anything new to find out. ’Cos we lived together…
NICHKHUN: … we already know each other’s habits.
CHANSUNG: Like snoring and all?
TAECYEON: Like sleeping habits, but we already knew that before we went on the trip.

2PM EXPERIENCING THE HARDSHIP TOGETHER WITH HAPPINESS - UW MAGAZINE [INTERVIEW]

South Korea dynamic group 2PM (Jun. K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho and Chansung) debuted in 2008, has got together with the full strength of six members, flying to Australia to film a reality travelling show <2PM Wild Beat>. After experiencing “working and travelling” overseas, are they still good friends? Are they still willing to travel overseas with one another?!
When receiving our exclusive email interview, Wooyoung (27 years old) and Junho (27 years old) was busy with their own schedules, and Jun. K (29 years old) was recuperating, thus were unable to answer our questions. Fortunately, Nichkhun (28 years old), Taecyeon (28 years old) and Chansung (27 years old) participated actively ðŸ™‚
Travelling together
UW: from the training period until now, 2PM has already interacted with one another for about 10 years, however this is your first time travelling together for a long period of time. How did you manage to “overcome” that?
Nichkhun: everyone knows that we have very strong teamwork, being able to work together. We lived together for a long period of time and also always going overseas to perform, hence we are very clear with one another’s small habits. I feel that we are a group of travelling companions who understand one another very well.
Taecyeon: as everyone knows one another very well, so even if it was challenging, it will be very comfortable. Being able to travel overseas together is already very fun.
Chansung: actually, I feel that finding a part time job is more challenging, however it is not very exhausting. In a nut shell, as everyone is a good person, hence all the challenges are positive.
Wooyoung exposing his true personality?
UW: we often say that when travelling together, the true personality will definitely be exposed. Do you agree? During this trip, did you manage to find out any true personalities?
Nichkhun: I agree that when everyone is travelling together, they will expose their true personality. However, as we have already known one another so well, there isn’t any surprising part. Even said so, when Wooyoung became the “king”, he has a side that I did not expect of. I always thought that he would not spend money recklessly but I really didn’t think that he would actually spend so much money! He is actually a very nice person, but everything changes once he becomes the “king”! (laughs)
Taecyeon: hmm… if we were to travel together, everyone’s true personalities may appear, but with the cameras around, will they really appear? (laughs) However, <2PM Wild Beat> did show our “natural side” as everyone are good friends, our relationship is also very good.
Chansung: I agree with this sentence, but I do not think that whatever is shown is their true personalities because during this trip, we have met with a lot of sudden situations. Or maybe when everyone is experiencing their “first time”, then they will show their true personalities. However, I do not think that just by judging from the person’s actions or reactions can clearly see their personalities without any errors.
UW: if you were to choose a “king” after the show, who would you choose?
Nichkhun: if I were to choose the “king” with the similar situations that happened during our trip, of course everyone should cast me a vote! (laughs) as what you have seen (from the show), I will be a very good king with no noxious intentions.
Taecyeon: I do not wish to choose a “king”. Everyone should work together, isn’t it better to travel together?
Chansung: I will not choose a “king”! (laughs)
Most exhausting VS most delightful
UW: what is the most exhausting part when filming this programme? Working? Living in a hostel? Limited budget?
Nichkhun: I think that the staying place has a little challenge. It felt like I went back in time to many years ago, the room when I was still a trainee. When I first entered the room, once I saw the double decker bed, it immediately came into my mind that it will be difficult to sleep.
Taecyeon: it is a little challenging to travel, film and work all at the same time. As for the hotel room situation, I didn’t feel unfamiliar at all hence it is not very tough for me.
Chansung: it should be the limited budget… I hope that (our budget) could be a little more because when I am travelling, I would want to do many thing and eat a lot of food!
UW: what is the most delightful thing when filming the programme?
Nichkhun: isn’t t just all of us being able to travel together to Australia? I feel that Australia is a place that can help us with healing mentally. The surroundings all have a nature conservation type of atmosphere, even the animals are not afraid of human.
Taecyeon: the most meaningful thing is to be able to travel with the members.
Chansung: I don’t think there is any.
Part time job experience
UW: every member in the first episode of the programme mentioned their ideal part time job, like Jun. L wanting to become a street busker, Chansung could be a nightclub’s security officer etc. Do you enjoy these part time jobs?
Nichkhun: within all the jobs done, I feel that helping to build homes for the penguins was the happiest. As they are really very cute, I could not feel the tiredness at all, what is the most important is that we made those for them.
Taecyeon: I don’t think I have any part time job that I especially want to do.
Chansung: personally, I enjoy feeding animals and clearing for them. This was also my first time experiencing this and communicating with them. I feel very amazed as they are practically the animals that I met for the first time in my life.
UW: if I were to ask you to choose a holiday job now, what will you choose?
Nichkhun: I would want to be a tour guide. Firstly, I am able to speak English and I hope to go to new places, meeting new people. If I were to really become a tour guide, I think I can be qualified.
Taecyeon: ah… this is too difficult to choose. I will skip this question (laughs).
Chansung: Bungee jumping worker! I feel that I am very good at giving someone a “push”! (laughs)
In the future, will you still travel overseas together?
UW: if you are still able to travel together, who will you choose? Why?
Nichkhun: which member do I want to travel with… I think I cannot make a decision because this trip with all members of 2PM was really enjoyable. I still want to travel together with them!
Taecyeon: if we could travel together again, I would still want to travel with all of them!
Chansung: I would still want to travel with everyone. Minjun’s personality is very bright, hence he is able to make good friends everywhere. Due to that, I do not have to worry no matter where I go. Recently, Nichkhun hyung and I have a common interest hence we are able to go and play golf together. Taecyeon hyung will be a very good partner to have a food trip. Wooyoung is more causal and would not plan while moving around. This type of trip is also interesting. Junho will obediently listen to me! (laughs)
UW: did this trip boost 2PM’s relationship?
Nichkhun: it did because we did a lot of talks, and it is even the first time all of us stay in the same room. Our friendship seems to become better.
Taecyeon: since the start we are able to interact very happily. Travelling together can help us to create more memories.
Chansung: in conclusion, this trip indeed gave us some challenges but I feel that the relationship between members did become closer.
UW: if you are able to choose the next trip location for 2PM, where will you choose? Why?
Nichkhun: if I could choose, I hope to go to America because I am very familiar with the place there. I hope that I can bring the members there.
Taecyeon: I will choose to go to Jeju Island because it is nearer, I can be more relaxed.
Chansung: I really do not know, but if we were to travel together with all the members, it will be very happy.
Taecyeon who will be enlisting this year, please help the members to say their 2017 wish: “let’s enlist together! This year, being in the military is the most important goal and decision.” (editor words: hope that all members of 2PM enlist together?! I think the fans will protest against it!)
*Below are the excerpts that are already in English. I did not translate them
UW: in the first episode of “2PM Wild Beat”, we saw the different characteristics of each member, do you agree with your assigned role?
Nichkhun: yes, I agree, I think we all have the best roles that fir our personality traits and characteristics. I had been working hard and when I was assigned to be king, I tried to be fair to everyone. For example, when I thought that it would be a little harder to make money in the beginning, I had to plan and collect money carefully. In the case of Junho, I guided the road without taking the app away from wherever I went. Wooyoung has always been so fun and it made my trip so enjoyable.
Taecyeon: I was assigned a character to myself for fun. If you only saw what was on air, then perhaps you may misunderstand me, but I do not usually spend a lot of money. I actually sacrificed myself for the fun of travelling with you ^ ^
Chansung: we do not have similar roles because we all have different characteristics. Therefore, I think that the various roles we adopted came by naturally, as opposed to something scripted. Out programme is also not just about playing multiple roles, but rather, it is centered on our casual friendship.
UW: if you can relabel each member instead of what is given to them in the programme, what will you label each member as and why?
Nichkhun: I like the angelic nickname given to me and I do not want to change it. Everyone seems to have a funny nickname. “The final boss of foul play” Wooyoung and “ExtravacaTAEC” Taecyeon.
Taecyeon: “ExtravacaTAEC” I still like my nickname. Did everyone’s nickname get along well? I think it seems to fit well.
Chansung: I thought I didn’t have any nicknames, but there seems to be some nicknames from the programme. My nickname becomes “Power Chansung” which I think it was funny.
