ABOUT
Author: Nichkhun
Nichkhun debuted as a 2PM member in 2008. He enjoys taking photos or drawing whenever he has time. He likes Paulo Coelho books, as the author travels the world by himself, meets people on his journeys, gets inspired by them, and writes books out of that. Nichkhun’s favorite book is, as expected, Paulo Coelho’s “Like the Flowing River.” He lives using his time for traveling and through his journeys he dreams of a meaningful life.
[ENG TRANS] Journey, Map that Embraces the Wind- NIchkhun
1. Every time I feel hesitant to move forward, my father would say, “turn crisis into opportunity”. When I heard those words from my father, I once again felt that he is a figure of strength and reliability, unmovable like a mountain.
2. At first it was a coincidence. Coincidently we met, having similar jobs and mutual hobbies made it easy for us to speak with each other, and it made us feel like we’ve met too late. So we decided to get to know each other better, and create fond memories together. Then on a lazy afternoon, hyung (Lee Jung Jin) asked if I wanted to go? And I asked, can I? Then it was set, we made a tacit consensus. This led us to come to this scenic location.
3. I spent more time by myself than with my family while I was growing up. But every time I was heading in the wrong direction, my mother would guide me back with her wise words of encouragement. Even now, when I feel lost, my mother’s words are still like a compass – “Do not rely on others, have faith in yourself.”
4. Unconsciously I had become someone who started to take shortcuts in life. While trying to find an easier path, I had led myself into more obstacles. Although it did not last long, it still became a life lesson of mine. “Do not lie to yourself.” It may seem like simple and ordinary words, but they are words I would use to warn myself. At least I do not wish to become one who betrays himself, this is a promise to myself.
5. Debut seemed just like yesterday, but it has already been ten years now. As time has flown by, I found myself painted in thicker camouflage. The thicker the camouflage, the harder to find my original self. Then someone told me – “It is never too late to start an adventure”. I wouldn’t call this an adventure, but I have planned to set off on a journey where I can remove my camouflage, because I am still young.
6. “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.” I cannot entirely contemplate the meaning of this quote, I just know that as a through and sophisticated scholar who proposed the formula of E=mc2 and proved the theory of relativity, Einstein said those words that entitled deep philosophical meaning. (Note: he didn’t really) As I got the moment to sit down and ponder, this made me realize that I was standing at an important crossroad of life full of opportunities.
7. I came upon these words as I was reading – “To become a better person, you should go out and see the world”. I greatly agree upon this quote; traveling is like nutrients that help me grow as a person. Thinking about Marcel Proust’s quote “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes” as I end my journey and return home, I can look back at how I’ve grown after my new experience.
8. If you feel numb towards your daily life, and the voice inside you starts making discordant sounds, making a getaway is your best choice. New comprehensions from the trip, scenery you’ve perceived along the way, on a journey that warms my heart, my soul will tell me the right answer.
9. I like the actor who was known as the representative of young actors by the name of Jameston(?), although he was born long before I was. With a rebellious heart that pushed him through a chaotic and insecure youth shown through his sophisticated gaze, he was easily recognized in worn-out black and white photos. That was what he left the world with, with the eternal legacy of his dreams, and living every day as though it was his last.
10. We all wish to live a happy life, but many of us don’t understand what true happiness is. I, as many are, feel the same; sometimes little things in life can make me happy, but sometime there are things that make me angry, further realizing they are only small things. Once in a while I would ask myself, am I really happy? Regretfully, even to a tiny question like this, I do not have a clear answer. If I think about it slightly more, then I would realize that happiness comes from small things. Two thousand years ago, Aristotle said that happiness is in our own hands, then Marcus Aurelius said that very little is needed to make a happy life. The answer is clear, so why should I search so hard for happiness? It’s already in my own heart. If you are looking for happiness, I can tell you that “happiness is within yourself”.
11. It is a blessing to do something and receive so much care and love from so many people, and it’s even a bigger blessing to be doing what I love. That is why I feel blessed. As someone who has received so much more than others, I have become more careful about my actions, and work more diligent in life. The motto which I live by is the words from Gandhi:
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.” Living in disorder is something that I do not want to see in myself in. Every time I find myself using exhaustion as an excuse, procrastinating, or isolating myself from the problem, I always look up to Gandhi’s words.
12. As I’ve grown older, I see myself grow into an adult, but at the same time I feel that the lines in my life have become blurry. Although I wish to say that I have become more accepting as a grown-up, it may be that I cannot be sure about my feelings, or have grown numb to my own life. Passion for things I do, and love for people I care for; this might be the simplest way to convey the life I am living now. The books, music and people that I love…All of which I can appreciate in one trip. Through travelling, I can also realize how much I like a person. One of my favourite authors, Mark Twain, once said “there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them”, and I cannot agree more.
